Banstead Village May Queen Fayre – Saturday 29th April 2017

The annual Banstead May Queen Fayre is nearly on us. We’ve been busy sorting out the various licences and permissions which allow us to hold the even,; we have been visiting and talking to the local businesses and traders who once again and without hesitation are generous in their support of the event and last but not least, our wonderful local schools and groups have agreed to provide the wonderful and lively entertainment on the day itself. Without doubt, this event would not be the success it is without all of this time and effort which is not just from the May Queen committee, but the community at large. Thank You for your support!
Everyone we talk to is keen to hear more about the charity we are supporting this year – Rett UK (http://www.rettuk.org/)  and the response is always the same – what a great charity to be supporting.

You probably haven’t heard of Rett, neither had a local Banstead Family until their daughter Catherine Kelly was diagnosed with it when she was around 18months old. Prior to this, Catherine was developing as most children her age do; she was walking, playing with her toys and had a few words but then this noticeably stopped happening. That is when her parents sought professional help and a diagnosis of a condition called Rett was given. Affecting approximately 1 in 12,000 girls, it is a neurological condition which is genetic but not hereditary; boys tend not to survive the condition. People with Rett syndrome have profound and multiple physical and communication disabilities and are totally reliant on others for support throughout their lives.

Rett UK supports families through a national helpline, including telephone, email and social media support, co-ordinate Rett specialist clinics in conjunction with the NHS, organise local support groups, as well as regional days and have a dedicated parental contact network. They also provide training for people who are supporting someone with Rett syndrome whether that is in a school, college, day centre, supported living, respite or residential setting. They are a small team working on a national level. They receive no government funding and rely entirely on donations and grants to fund their work. Rett UK has been hugely helpful to Catherine and her family and we hope you agree that Rett UK is a worthy recipient of all the money raised at the next Banstead Village May Queen Day on Saturday 29th April 2017.
